Project Four: Clinic Education

Abstract

Calcutta has patient clinics in both rural and urban regions. We will conduct a brief education program for patients attending the clinics. The program will teach patient proper hand hygiene techniques. We will conduct survey research to measure efficacy of program.

Measurements

Primary Measurements

Interval Variables

  1. Patient awareness of hand hygiene technique before program

  2. Patient execution of hand hygiene technique before program

  3. Patient awareness of hand hygiene technique after program

  4. Patient execution of hand hygiene technique after program

  5. Patient execution of hand hygiene technique 2 weeks after program

  6. # of patients participating in program (goal 25)

Secondary Measurements

Interval Variables

  1. # of steps in program

  2. Ease of understanding program

  3. Cost of program

Process

(1) We will research current WHO protocols on hand hygiene. (2) We will adapt these protocols into a curriculum tailored to patients in Calcutta. (3) We will acquire translators and transportation for trips to periphery clinics in India. We will focus on clinics where there is a repeated population of patients. (4) We will conduct pre-test post-test survey research to measure the efficacy of the education program.

Challenges

(1) Communicating medical information across a broad population can be a difficult task, particularly when dealing with a foreign population. (2) The relationship between patients and foreign educators may impede results. (3) Acquiring transportation and translators creates a reliance on external resources. If these resources fail while in India the project is nullified.
